Creating a website that drives action

You are ready to get a website or to redo it, but it's overwhelming and a lot of work! I've listed a few steps that you should take to make the process easier.

What do you want your website to do?

Find your main goal of your website. What do you want people to do when they come on to it?

  1. Sell services or products you want people to purchase
  2. Show your amazing work through a portfolio
  3. Inspire people with a blog

Target market

Now make sure that how you write, the design and content reaches out to these people. If you haven't gone through who your target market is, this is the first step to find out who they are.

What pages do you need?

Start visualising what you want people to do when they come on to your page and what they want more of. A few common pages are:

  • home
  • about
  • faq
  • services
  • webshop
  • blog
  • contact

What are things to include on your homepage

A couple of things that your site can really need!

Tagline

Your webpage and brand should have some sort of tagline that describes your business: who you are, what you do and how you do it. This is usually what appears on the header image.

Introduction

Explain your business more and even a bit about yourself. You want this to be short and sweet. A lot of times I come on to sites and I don't event understand what they do! Add this to the top of the homepage so people understand right away what the site offers.

Social media

Make it easy for the client to find out more about you and your businesses. This either appears in your header, footer or even middle of the page depending on what feels most important.

Call to action

Find out what you want your audience to do when they are on your page. I would advice to have this on every page. Either sign up to your newsletter (give them a small gift for free: ebook, screensaver f.ex.), purhase a product/services, contact you about a service or to sign up for a program, read your blog post etc.

Contact info

On the webpage, usually in the footer we want to add your name, address if it's a store, contact information and social media. Don't hide this and make it difficult for them to find. Personally, I will always scroll to the bottom to find this if I'm in a rush - so if you are a local business that offers services this is key! Inform them how to contact you and a personal message to make the page more friendly and what they might gain from contacting you.

Visual

Photos are so important to make the site look good. My advice would get a professional photographer - I find this cheaper if you are getting quite a few photos and it makes you look amazing. Yes you can get stockphotos, but they get pricey and you see other people using them. However, If you aren't to keen on that, illustrations, patterns and textures are a great way to add extra elements to your site.

Testimonial

Add testimonials from clients! We all love seeing that others love your business, give yourself a confident boost and ask your clients. It doesnโ€™t have to be in an obvious way, but ask what they thought about it. What they liked, what you can improve and then ask if you can use it!

Blog

Are you wondering if you need a blog? This is a great place to give your clients a more insight to your business and inspire them. This can either be to introduce new things happening, recipes, personal reflection etc. However, try to keep it a bit consistent and make sure itโ€™s something you like talking about or else you wonโ€™t continue. Create a few categories and have a look at other blogs you like. Then have a list where you can write down all your blog ideas for the future. Have a couple of posts prepared before launching.

Newsletter

Setting up a newsletter is a good way to keep people in the loop on what is going on with your business, views or to inspire your audience.
